CEREMONIA DEL HAIN (Hain ceremony)

CEREMONIA DEL HAIN (Hain ceremony)

The rites of passage to adulthood of the ancient Selk’nam tribe was called the Hain Ceremony. The young men were brought in to a dark hut where they were confronted by “spirits” – or tribal elders disguised as such. The young men did not know that these spirits were not real. They were encouraged to confront their fears by unmasking the spirits. Once they learned that they spirits were merely humans, they were then considered adults of the tribe and taught the Selk’nam story of world creation.
